The mitzvah of מזוזה, mezuzah, is derived from two sections in the Torah: דברים, Deuteronomy [6:4-9 and 11:13-21]. The mitzvah consists of affixing to the doorpost a parchment inscribed with the two sets of verses from “Shema” and “Vehayah im shamoa.”
The hand written verses on parchment are usually placed in a case and fastened to the outer tefach (handbreadth) on the bottom of the upper third of the right doorpost. The Talmud states that one who performs this mitzvah meticulously will merit long life and protection for family and home.
But one performs the mitzvah out of a desire to fulfill God’s commandment and not for any other reason.
